Fenugreek for Natural Hair Growth

Slip is every naturalista’s best friend. Slip is a term us naturals use when we are discussing products that help detangle our hair. If a product has good detangling properties it will help loosen tangles along the hair strand. Products like these will be described as having “great slip”. Usually products with great slip make it easy for our hands to glide through our hair and make detangling less of a task. Slip is usually used to describe conditioners.

I was drawn to Fenugreek after reading and watching videos detailing its detangling capabilities. Many naturals rave about its abilities to smooth the hair allowing for easy detangling post wash.

Fenugreek or Methi dana is a plant known as Trigonella foenum-graecum. Fenugreek is grown in warmer climates all over the world. The plant has pods that contain small golden-brown seeds. These seeds can be harvested and used as is or ground up into a fine powder. It has been used in Indian alternative medicine, Ayruveda, to aid in digestive issues, improve libido and reduce hair fall by conditioning the hair.

Benefits

One property of fenugreek is its slippage. When the seeds and/or powder is used, there is a certain mucilage that forms. This mucilage aids in the slip and detangling properties that we love.

Fenugreek supports a healthy scalp – it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can be used to treat conditions such as dry, irritated skin, and dandruff.

Fenugreek seeds contain vitamins such as Vitamins A and C, biotin, folic acid, and niacin. Check out Vitamins for Hair Growth to see how these vitamins support healthy hair growth.

Fenugreek seeds contain amino acids making the protein content very high. The protein strengthens the hair, decreasing hair breakage and excessive hair shedding

Fenugreek also contains flavonoids which protect our hair from environmental damage caused by sun and other elements

How to Use

There are numerous ways to incorporate Fenugreek seeds into your hair care routine. The seeds/oil can be used to infuse with penetrating oils for a hair growth oil, used in deep conditioning and for daily leave-in sprays.

Here at The4cVoice, we love adding Fenugreek to our deep conditioners to aid in detangling and boost the conditioning for our hair!

  • Use about 1/4 cup of Fenugreek seeds/powder plus 0.5-1 cup of warm water. Make sure the water covers the top of the Fenugreek.
  • Mix well
  • Allow to sit overnight at room temperature
  • Strain the Fenugreek (the Fenugreek caught by the strainer can be saved and used for future treatments!)
  • Add the Fenugreek mixture that flowed through the strainer to a bowl and add your favorite deep conditioner to it. Apply as usual – this is a Ayurvedic gloss!

Another favorite of ours is using Fenugreek in leave-in spray. Use the recipe above and strain after sitting overnight. Add the mixture to a spray bottle and add in some glycerin and your favorite essential oils. This can be used as a daily hair mist/leave in spray!

Using Fenugreek will definitely add in some slip to your products – making detangling easier for you! You will also get the added conditioning properties, making it a staple for hair growth!
